Dwarf Hairgrass (Eleocharis parvula)

Overview

Dwarf hairgrass is the go-to plant for a fresh, grassy foreground lawn. Fine bright-green blades spread by runners into a dense carpet that sways in the current like a meadow.

It is more demanding than the low-tech staples: a proper carpet needs high light and, for reliable results, CO2.

Light & CO2

To carpet horizontally rather than grow tall and sparse, dwarf hairgrass needs strong light reaching the substrate, and CO2 makes a dense carpet far more achievable. In low light it grows leggy and thin.

Planting & placement

Separate the mat into small tufts of a few blades and plant them a couple of centimetres apart across the foreground. They knit together into a lawn as the runners spread.

Feeding & growth

A nutrient-rich substrate (aquasoil) plus balanced water-column dosing feeds the carpet. Trim the lawn with scissors to keep it low and encourage horizontal, denser growth.

Propagation

It propagates itself by runners spreading sideways under the substrate , the more you plant and the better the conditions, the faster the tufts join into a full carpet.

Common problems

Tall, sparse, pale growth means not enough light is reaching the base (or no CO2). Increase light, add CO2, and trim it short to force horizontal runners. Algae on a slow carpet points to excess light without enough CO2/nutrients.

Fun facts

  • Dwarf hairgrass carpets by spreading runners sideways under the substrate.
  • Trimming it short encourages denser, more horizontal growth.
  • High light plus CO2 is the reliable recipe for a proper carpet.
  • It is planted in small tufts a couple of centimetres apart, not as one mat.
  • In low light it grows tall and thin instead of carpeting.

Frequently asked questions

Does dwarf hairgrass need CO2 to carpet?

Not strictly, but CO2 makes a dense, reliable carpet far easier. Without CO2 you need very strong light and patience, and results are often thinner.

How do you plant dwarf hairgrass?

Split the mat into small tufts of a few blades and plant them a couple of centimetres apart across the foreground. They spread by runners and knit into a lawn.

Why is my dwarf hairgrass growing tall and thin?

Not enough light is reaching the substrate. Increase light intensity, add CO2, and trim it short to push horizontal, carpeting growth.

How long does dwarf hairgrass take to carpet?

With high light, CO2 and a nutrient substrate, a few weeks to a couple of months. Planting more tufts closer together speeds it up.

Is dwarf hairgrass a good foreground plant?

Yes , it is the classic grassy foreground carpet, though it is more demanding (high light, ideally CO2) than low-tech foreground options.
