Overview
The electric blue ahli is a stunning cichlid from Lake Malawi, one of the great African Rift Lakes. Adult males are colored an almost glowing electric blue from nose to tail, which is how the fish earned its name. Females and young fish are a more silvery color, so it is the mature males that put on the dazzling show.
Lake Malawi is a huge, clear lake with hard, alkaline water and rocky shores, and the electric blue ahli is built for that world. In the wild it hunts smaller fish among the rocks. In an aquarium it is active, bold, and semi-aggressive, so it needs the right tankmates and plenty of space to shine.

Water and tank
This active cichlid needs a large tank, at least 55 gallons, with room to swim and set up territories. Lake Malawi water is hard and alkaline, so a higher pH suits this fish well. Strong filtration keeps the water clean, since cichlids can be messy eaters.
Aquascape and setup
Recreate the rocky lake shore with lots of stacked rocks and caves that form territories and hiding places. A sandy substrate looks natural and is easy on the fish. Live plants are often nibbled or dug up, so many keepers rely on rockwork for decoration instead.
Diet
The electric blue ahli is a carnivore that hunts small fish in the wild. In a tank, feed a quality cichlid pellet along with frozen foods like brine shrimp and krill. Avoid feeding too much fatty food, and skip mammal meats, which can harm African cichlids over time.
Tankmates and temperament
This is a semi-aggressive fish that defends its space, especially at breeding time. Keep it with other similarly sized Lake Malawi cichlids that can hold their own. Overcrowding a little can actually spread out aggression, but always give everyone enough rock caves.
Mouthbrooding mothers
Like many Malawi cichlids, the electric blue ahli is a mouthbrooder. After the eggs are fertilized, the mother scoops them into her mouth and carries them there until they hatch and grow big enough to swim free. She even lets the fry dart back inside when danger is near.

Frequently asked questions
Why is only my male electric blue ahli so blue?
Males develop the bright electric blue color as they mature, while females and young fish stay a plainer silver. This helps males show off to attract mates.
Is the electric blue ahli aggressive?
It is semi-aggressive and defends its territory, especially when breeding. Keep it with other sturdy Malawi cichlids of similar size and provide lots of rocky caves.
What does mouthbrooding mean?
It means the mother holds her eggs and babies inside her mouth to protect them until they can survive on their own. Many Lake Malawi cichlids do this.
What kind of water does this cichlid need?
Hard, alkaline water with a high pH, matching Lake Malawi. Stable, clean, warm water and plenty of rockwork keep it healthy and colorful.
