The dwarf orange crayfish, often called the CPO after its scientific name, is a miniature crayfish that looks like a tiny bright orange lobster. It stays so small that it can live happily in a nano tank, and unlike its bigger crayfish cousins, it is peaceful enough to share a tank with fast, calm fish. Its glowing orange color, developed by breeders, makes it stand out against green plants and dark substrate.

This little crayfish comes from Mexico in Central America and spends its day scavenging along the bottom, poking under leaves and decorations for anything edible. It is curious and active, and it will sometimes tidy up leftover food and dead plant matter. Like all crayfish, it moults to grow, shedding its whole shell and hiding until the new one hardens, which is the most delicate time in its life.

The dwarf orange crayfish is a tiny crayfish from lakes and streams in Mexico. Wild members of its family are a plain brownish color, but the bright orange form was created by breeders. Because it stays so small and mild-mannered, it is one of the very few crayfish that can be trusted in a peaceful community setup.

Tank and water needs

A single dwarf orange crayfish can live in a tank as small as 5 gallons (19 L), with more room for a small group. Keep the water on the cooler side, from 65 to 75 F (18 to 24 C), with a pH anywhere from 6.5 to 8.0. Provide lots of caves, tubes, and plants for hiding, especially since they need a safe place to hide while moulting. A secure lid helps, as crayfish can climb.

Diet and feeding

Dwarf orange crayfish are scavengers that eat almost anything. Offer sinking pellets, algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein like a bit of frozen food. They also nibble leftover food and dead plant matter, acting as a small cleanup crew along the bottom of the tank.

Tankmates and temperament

This is one of the few crayfish gentle enough for a community tank. It generally leaves fish alone, though it may grab a very slow or sick fish or a sleeping shrimp if it can. Good tankmates are quick, mid-water fish like small tetras and rasboras. Give each crayfish its own hiding spot so a group does not squabble.

Moulting and breeding

Like all crayfish, the dwarf orange moults to grow, shedding its whole shell and hiding while the new soft shell hardens. Do not remove the old shell right away, because the crayfish often eats it to reclaim minerals. They breed fairly easily, with the mother carrying her eggs and then tiny babies under her tail.
