Java Moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri)

Overview

Java moss is the most forgiving plant in the hobby , a soft, tangled green moss that attaches to anything, needs no substrate or CO2, and survives conditions that kill everything else.

It is invaluable as cover: shrimp graze the biofilm it collects, fry hide in it, and it softens driftwood and rock into a mossy, mature-looking scape.

Light & CO2

Java moss grows in almost any light, including very low, and needs no CO2. Brighter light and CO2 make it grow denser and more compact; low light gives a looser, stringier form.

Attaching & placement

Tie or glue a thin layer to driftwood, rock or mesh, or simply wedge it into crevices , it grips and grows over the surface. Keep the layer thin so water and light reach the inside, or the core browns.

Feeding & growth

It feeds from the water column, so a general liquid fertiliser is plenty. Trim it with scissors to keep the shape tidy; loose bits will re-attach and grow wherever they land.

Propagation

Propagation could not be simpler: pull off a piece and put it somewhere else. Every fragment grows into more moss.

Common problems

A thick clump browns and traps debris in the core , keep layers thin, rinse out detritus, and trim regularly. It can also trap algae; good flow and grazers (shrimp) keep it clean.

Fun facts

  • Java moss attaches to almost anything and needs no substrate, CO2 or special light.
  • Shrimp and fry love it , it collects biofilm to graze and gives babies cover.
  • Every fragment you pull off grows into a new clump.
  • Keeping the layer thin stops the core from browning and trapping debris.
  • It is a favourite for aquascaping mossy trees and carpets over mesh.

Frequently asked questions

How do you attach Java moss?

Tie it on with thread or fishing line, use gel superglue, or wedge it into crevices of wood and rock. It grips the surface as it grows; keep the layer thin so light and water reach the inside.

Does Java moss need light or CO2?

It grows in almost any light, including very low, and needs no CO2. More light and CO2 simply produce denser, more compact growth.

Why is my Java moss turning brown in the middle?

A clump that grows too thick traps debris and blocks light and water from the core. Keep the layer thin, rinse out detritus, and trim it regularly.

Is Java moss good for shrimp?

Excellent. It collects biofilm that shrimp graze on and provides dense cover for baby shrimp and fish fry, making it a staple of shrimp and breeding tanks.

How do you propagate Java moss?

Simply tear off a piece and place it elsewhere , every fragment grows into a new clump, so it spreads with zero effort.
